There’s just something about a small town…

Crime reporter Camille Preaker, suffering from alcoholism and recently discharged from a psychiatric hospital after years of self-harming, returns to her hometown of Wind Gap, Missouri, to investigate the murders of two young girls. The assignment takes her back to her childhood home under the critical eye of her mother, Adora, a small-town socialite, which forces Preaker to confront some personal demons.

Lately, no matter what HBO tends to be throwing at us, we are welcoming it with open arms. This, is certainly no different. The characters, the setting, the story. Everything within Sharp Objects beautifully and stylistically pulls together to become quite possibly the show of the season, if not – year.

To be frank, Amy Adams has never really stood out to me as an actor that really ‘pushes’ herself, but rather just blends in with the curtains in most of her work. Well, in this particular show, this is far from the case. The actor simply illuminated the screen with a trembling dark aura that will have you quivering and left pondering far into the credits. It has been while since I have seen an actor truly take charge and deliver something, so out of persona and delicately weird and intriguing. Adams, simply exudes award potential – truly captivating and emboding her character in every way possible.

The characters and story fit so weirdly yet perfectly, painting a numbing picture of rural Missouri and small towns in general.

Miss Adams isn’t the only actor worth mentioning within this series. Patricia Clarkson’s portrayal of ‘Adora’ is terrifying in every way. Her frustrating methods and controlling nature is enough to send a cold shiver down the spine of even the toughest of viewer.

Now, although I may have painted a picture of fear and terror – this show is much more ‘Mystery’ than ‘Horror’. Resembling the likes of  past hit True Detective: Season 1.

Adapted from Gillian Flynn’s novel of the same name, Sharp Objects is certainly one to watch. Having powered through the season, I was left in awe, surprise and dare I say it… Slightly disturbed. But in a good way? The show packs a punch and much like the authors other stories, you will be take for a wild ride right till the end.

The show is currently on HBO, and I assure you – it is well worth the watch.
