Insecure “Familiar-Like” Recap

Although this week’s episode of Insecure was a bit slower paced for me, it was refreshing to explore more of Daniel as a character and his and Issa’s relationship.

Issa is still having problems at her job and as we later find out in the episode, she’s not happy there either. When she goes to Kelli, one of her friends, for financial advice, she doesn’t have a good enough credit score to rent an apartment as well. I enjoyed this scene not because we continuously see how bad Issa’s credit score is (425, Issa? Really?), we also get to see Kelli in her place of work. For the past two seasons, I’ve been waiting to see more from Kelli as a whole character instead of the comedic friend. But it also begs the question, why is Issa so far off (in terms of finances and social class) from her friends? Couldn’t Molly, Kelli, or Tiffany help Issa get another job? Even though Issa hates asking others for help, I’m sure her friends could’ve suggested other careers or job positions that she may be interested in.

Moving on to Daniel, we got to see his insecurities as well. How his high school friend is more successful than him as a producer, and that his ego/pride has sort of gotten in the way of his success as well. Like Issa, he also found it hard to ask for help and that’s what Issa helped him realize by the end of the episode. That it’s okay to ask for help when you need it.

How Issa’s and Daniel’s interactions played out throughout the episode, I wouldn’t be surprised if they reached the conclusion that they should remain good friends. It seems like they both genuinely care for each other but I don’t think they may be right for one another. However, there’s a part of me that thinks they may end up caving in, once again. Especially with the promos for the next episode! And even though Issa is single, she needs to find her own place ASAP instead of falling into comfort at Daniel’s place.
