Insecure: “Ghost-Like” Recap

And just like that, season three of Insecure is over. The finale was entertaining to say the least, with plot threads I hope they intend to explore in season four.

We see Issa going around to local businesses, hoping they’ll say yes to sponsoring her block party. Unfortunately, all she receives are no’s and one, “How many b**ches are gonna be there?” She later confesses to Molly that she’s going to put the project on hold, since it seemed too hard and like nothing was going anywhere with all her rejections. As someone who’s also a creative, it can be very discouraging to get constant rejections so I get where she’s coming from. But you shouldn’t let that stop you.

We get a scene with Lawrence talking to his dad and he tells him that he and Issa are “done done,” when asked about their status. He admits he doesn’t want a woman with baggage (and to be honest, that’s a bit hypocritical coming from him). He wants an easy relationship but his dad tells him that relationships and love take work. Then when he finds out his friend Chad got back together with his fiance, I thought that maybe Lawrence was going to try to make things work with Issa. But while they were talking during the movie screening, when she said that she was putting her project on hold because it got too hard, it seemed like that was Lawrence’s indication that he can’t see himself with Issa again. That she isn’t trying to put in the effort to get what she wants and if she isn’t doing that with her project, then what would that mean for a second chance at their relationship?

When Molly goes to pick up Issa for her birthday surprise, she sees Nathan about to go visit Issa with a bouquet of flowers. She tells him to leave, citing that he shouldn’t be there after no texts or calls for a month (it only felt like maybe 2-3 weeks?). Was Molly right to do this? I understood where she was coming from, but I do think she still should’ve told Issa from the beginning instead of dropping it later during their sleepover. And speaking of said sleepover, it was interesting that these two friends have seemed to finally drop the truths about each other. Issa had a very valid point about Molly casting people aside in order for her to be at the top. “Do you want to be a partner with everyone else hating you?” And that seemed to come true when Molly goes in to work and Torian takes himself off the case with her, and joins the two women she shunned earlier in the season. Molly really should’ve listened to her therapist and stopped trying to be the star of the firm.

However, I am glad that what Issa said seemed to finally get to her and she called Andrew to apologize. He didn’t seem too receptive of her apology but I do hope that maybe something can work out between them. I believe Andrew might be the one to shed Molly of her preconceived notions of love/relationships, and make her realize that not all men are the same.

Lastly, the final scene with Issa and Nathan has been bugging me. I thought maybe Nathan would just give a lame excuse for his disappearance but as we see, it’s hinted that he most likely deals with depression. “I got a little sad and in my head and I have no one to talk to.” And then Issa had the audacity to be so completely dismissive of that. However, I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt that she was raised in a household that disregarded mental illness and something that’s just in your head. In the black community, mental illness is something that’s not talked and more often than not, it doesn’t help when the parents/guardians are also religious and tell you to just “pray it away.” I hope that in season four, they tackle this issue and I really believe Issa (the character) should apologize to Nathan for being so dismissive. I understood that he couldn’t give a better explanation because how can you, when you have no one to talk to. And I’m sure now he’ll probably feel more bad with how Issa didn’t seem to care/acknowledge his feelings. She only made it about him. Being vulnerable like Nathan was isn’t easy and he at least cared enough to try and explain to her what happened. I know it doesn’t make up for his month long absence, but you never know what people are going through and plus, they just met.

Overall, I felt like this season didn’t grab me as much as the first two. It was too slow for my taste, and they dragged on things that could’ve been glossed over. Like the Daniel situation. We spend 2-3 episodes exploring him and his family and for what? It didn’t seem to add anything and I would’ve rather cut his screen time to see Tiffany and Kelli make up.

Side Observations:

  • Lawrence doesn’t want a woman with baggage yet he had unprotected sex and caught chlamydia.
  • Kelli had an abortion? We really need to explore more of her next season.
  • I wonder if Molly will be able to change things in her work life?
